Autonomous sorting with AI for a circular textile chain



The challenge: pollution from textiles on a global scale
The textile industry is one of the most polluting sectors in the world. Every year, millions of tonnes of clothing end up on landfill sites or in incinerators, while valuable materials are lost. Much of the collected textile cannot be efficiently reused or recycled, as sorting is largely manual and prone to errors. Furthermore, reliable data on the composition and quality of textiles is lacking, making circular processing difficult to scale.

The solution: autonomous sorting with AI
Within the S3ORTED initiative, we develop AI that autonomously makes sorting decisions for the reuse and recycling of textiles. We do this for both mechanical and chemical recycling. By employing vision and sensor technology, we recognize garments, materials, and their condition, and directly link that information to the appropriate processing route. This makes sorting faster, more accurate, and scalable. Through machine learning, our models improve themselves, resulting in each sorting decision providing more knowledge and precision than the last.
