Vision AI for smart and sustainable waste sorting

Ortessa Groep B.V. (holding company of Van Kaathoven, Rondo, Lammertyn.net, Langezaal, Huiskamp, BR Containers and Valor) is starting a collaboration with Code for Good to accelerate its digital transformation. With an innovative Vision AI solution, both parties are committing to smarter classification of waste streams, preserving raw material value and reducing manual sorting processes.

The collaboration kicks off at the sorting site of Langezaal in Haaksbergen. By utilising Vision AI technology, materials on an existing sorting line are automatically recognised and classified. This provides real-time insight into the composition of waste streams and allows valuable raw materials to be better separated before they are lost in the treatment process.

Smarter sorting with Vision AI

The waste sector faces major challenges. Increasing labour shortages, rising operational costs and the growing demand for high-quality recycling require innovation. Ortessa and Code for Good share the conviction that this is not just about robotisation, but also about intelligent software, AI models and algorithms that transform existing processes in a scalable way.

With Code for Good's Vision AI infrastructure, various material streams, including wood, plastic, PVC, plaster, film, metal and rubble, are automatically identified on the existing sorting belt. This creates an objective and scalable way to analyse and optimise waste streams.

Martien van Eersel, Business Development Manager at Ortessa, explains:

“This aligns seamlessly with where Ortessa wants to go. We strongly believe in the power of AI and data to accelerate innovation.”

Marcel Kokhuis, director of Langezaal, adds:

“When you have the right insights, you can act quickly and make better choices. We like speed, so that matches well with the culture at Code for Good.”

Stefan van Vugt, Commercial Director at Code for Good:

“The future of the waste sector lies in self-learning systems that continuously improve. By adding Vision AI to existing processes, we generate valuable insights. This project demonstrates how AI not only delivers efficiency, but also directly contributes to circularity.”

Scalable foundation for further innovation

The first step at Langezaal forms the basis for a broader roll-out of AI-driven waste processing within Ortessa. By collecting data and continuously improving AI models, a scalable foundation is created that can also be rolled out across multiple locations.
